Executive assessment · Strong shortlist candidate

Consider Claude for document-heavy work, drafting and coding assistance. Use the app for work a person directs; consider the API for repeatable workflows. Keep a person accountable for facts, calculations and decisions.

TEMRIK editorial assessment · Sources checked 25 September 2026

Our recommendation

Claude deserves a place on an SME shortlist when the work involves reading, drafting or developing software. The useful question is whether it delivers an acceptable result with less total effort—including checking and correcting it.

For a quantity surveyor, a sensible first use is organising a specification into a review checklist. A poor first use is letting it certify quantities or approve a variation without checking the drawings, contract and arithmetic.

Key functions and usefulness matrix

These are editorial suitability ratings, not measured accuracy scores. Strong fit means worth piloting with human review; conditional fit requires additional controls; poor fit means do not use it as the sole decision-maker.

FunctionAssessmentHow we recommend using it
Document synthesisStrong fitAsk for an issue register with source passages, not an untraceable executive conclusion. Check omissions against the original documents.
Drafting and rewritingStrong fitProvide audience, tone, an approved example and facts that must not change. Approve the final wording before sending.
Coding assistanceConditional fitUse a branch, automated tests and human review. A plausible code explanation is not evidence that the change works.
Workflow integrationConditional fitThe API can participate in an application workflow. Your application still needs permissions, validation, logging and failure handling.
Final quantities, payments or professional decisionsPoor fit as sole authorityUse deterministic calculations and qualified sign-off. A general language model is not a certified measurement or approval system.

Where to use Claude

Claude is available through web, desktop and mobile apps. Start there when a person will supply the context, inspect the answer and decide what happens next. This is usually the simplest way to discover whether a workflow is worth automating.

The API is a separate route for developers to call models from their own software. A paid Claude app subscription does not include API usage. Do not budget an automated workflow using only the monthly chat subscription price.

Using Claude in a custom TEMRIK build

TEMRIK designs custom builds around each client’s workflows and chosen tools. For Claude, an API-based workflow can retrieve approved records, send the relevant context to the model, validate its response and present a draft for approval.

Example: extract potential variation events from correspondence into a register containing the source, date, issue and missing evidence. Keep contract entitlement, valuation and client communication behind a review step. The scope should define data access, vendor licensing, approval rules and the systems the client wants connected.

Choosing a cheaper model

API costs depend on the model, input and output tokens, and optional features. Providers measure processed content in tokens; the number varies with the content and model. Anthropic lists different model tiers, caching rates and batch rates. Compare the live pricing table before committing.

Our recommendation: test a cheaper model such as Haiku for bounded classification or extraction; escalate difficult exceptions to a more capable model. Keep a fixed set of representative cases and compare missed fields, unsupported claims, latency and reviewer corrections. A lower token bill is not a saving if it doubles checking time.

Budget total cost as model usage + integration operation + human review + rework. Use shorter relevant context, sensible output limits and eligible caching or batch processing. Model changes require regression checks; do not silently swap engines on high-consequence work.

Alternatives worth comparing

ChatGPT / OpenAI GPT models

Include GPT models in the same API evaluation, especially if you already operate OpenAI-based workflows. Compare actual output quality and total cost on identical cases. ChatGPT is the user-facing app; GPT API models are the integration option. Neither a brand name nor a benchmark headline establishes the winner for your task.

Google Gemini

Include Gemini when reviewing a second model provider or a different cost profile. Its API pricing varies by model and modality. Evaluate the exact model and feature combination you intend to deploy; do not assume the consumer app, Workspace features and API are interchangeable purchases.

For dependable totals or fixed approvals, the best alternative may be ordinary software: a spreadsheet, rules engine or specialist system. Use an LLM only where language interpretation adds value.

A useful first pilot

  1. Choose one recurring document task and prepare authorised, representative examples with known answers.
  2. Ask Claude for a structured draft with supporting passages and an explicit “not found” option. Never reward it for filling every field.
  3. Compare the result with a human baseline and at least one alternative model. Record errors, review time and cost per accepted output.
  4. Approve wider use only after the workflow meets your quality threshold. Keep a manual fallback and repeat the check when models or prompts change.

Watch for confident omissions, invented references and instructions embedded in uploaded documents. Limit tool permissions and require approval before sending messages, changing records or committing money.

Evidence and review method

This review draws on official product documentation. We have not conducted a controlled hands-on benchmark for this review. Vendor documentation describes availability and billing. It does not establish independent performance. Suitability assessments and proposed workflows are TEMRIK editorial recommendations. No numerical performance score or measured customer outcome is claimed.
